This unpretentious restaurant specializes in traditional Sichuanese cuisine which offers something for diners of all ages. In a bid to ensure authenticity, the chain flies certain Sichuanese ingredients to branches all over China. The house specialty is the Dongpo rou, a braised fatty pork dish which is said to have been created by Song dynasty poet Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo. Indeed, the restaurant’s name is a combination of the names of the poet and his Sichuanese hometown.

Tips for you

  • Don’t expect any of the wait staff to speak any English but you can order easily enough with a big menu that is full of photos with English titles and descriptions for the dishes. Only their seasonal menu is all in Chinese, but you can still order by looking through the photos.
  • Veggie dishes are all light and healthy with very little oil or salt used
  • Very reasonable prices with a meal for 2-3 under RMB 200.
  • Restaurant is open late night, there are still customers walking in past midnight!
  • With multiple locations all over the city, Meizhou Dongpo is a convenient option for a simple, straight-forward Sichuan meal.
  • Although it’s a Sichuan restaurant chain, you can request for the super spicy dishes to be toned down and their non-spicy dishes are equally as good as well.
  • You can only reserve private rooms (with a minimum charge) so you can’t reserve small tables, but the wait is never very long.
