I should perhaps preface this review by stating that I'm the artistic sort, and I generally enjoy painting and drawing and that sort of thing. :) That said, I really enjoyed myself at Marumasu Nishimuraya! I made a booking online for the kyo-yuzen dyeing workshop (the website has an English version) and had a little personal lesson. There were other people who came before and after me and they attended to each group separately. The instructor spoke reasonable English - not thoroughly fluent, but enough to be understood. You first choose the item you wish to paint - they have a range from canvas bags to little phone cases, and your fee is based on the item you pick. I chose a bag and that cost about 1,300yen (I think). After that you can choose your stencil(s). They have a wide array of stencils, but I found the floral ones to be the most detailed and prettiest in general. The instructor will show you how to go about using the stencils and after that, you're off! It's pretty easy, actually. I sat there for quite a while - maybe about two hours or slightly more - and they appeared to have no problem with that. However, this may be because I was there during a low tourist season so they weren't packed with bookings and could therefore afford to be more relaxed with time.
