Why Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is special ?
Lou Lim Ieoc Garden (in Portuguese: Jardim Lou Lim Ieoc) is located in the middle of Macau Peninsular at the northern foot of Guia Hill, covers an area of 1.78 hectares with scenic landscapes. This elegant garden was modeled after Suzhou Lion Grove Garden, one of the four most famous classic gardens in Suzhou, being the only one with Suzhou classical garden style in Macau. Lou Lim Ieoc Garden was once named "Entertainment Garden" and hailed as one of three famous gardens of Macau many years ago. And in 1992, it was rated as one of Macau’s eights sights.
Lou Lim Ieoc Garden is a great place for sightseeing as it has quaint moon gate, shady walkways, grotesque rocks of man-made hills, bamboo groves, towering banyan tress, winding corridors, elegant pavilions, spattering waterfalls, ponds with green lotus, etc. The waterside pavilion is the centerpiece of Lou Lim leoc Garden. Despite it is a traditional Chinese architecture, some western architectural elements are embedded in, such as the external wall painted in light yellow, the favorite color of Portuguese, gothic porticoes, white European-style carvings at the top of porticoes. The barrier close to the pond is painted red, China’s favorite color. This building reflects the fusion of oriental and western cultures.
What to explore at Lou Lim Ieoc Garden?
The garden is modeled on those of Suzhou, the most famous of all Chinese classical gardens. Enclosed by a high wall, it is a miniaturized landscape with narrow paths winding through groves of bamboo and flowering bushes, under moulded concrete "mountains" to a large pond filled with golden carp and lotus flowers. A nine-turn bridge zigzags across the pond (according to legend, evil spirits can only move in straight lines) to a large pavilion combining Classical and Chinese architecture elements. There are frequent art and craft exhibitions in the pavilion, which also serves as an auditorium for recitals during the annual International Music Festival.

Tips for you
I have been to this Suzhou-style little garden in Macau on several occasions, and it is very relaxing to stroll around it and take a break from the bustle of the Macau city center. There is a pond and a few rock sculptures, and a fair number of exotic plants and trees. You can watch older Macau inhabitants practice Tai Chi or listen to Chinese music blaring from a transistor radio of a local sitting on a bench. It's like being transported into the Macau of old days....
It is a park where locals go to spend their spare time. Sometimes it has display of seasonal flowers. It is suzhou garden style with a lake and rock sculpture. Sometimes you will hear people singing opera and playing chinese music. There is also a gallery and tea museum. It was originally owned by a wealthy merchant but later bought by the Macau Government. Now it is free admission.
The perfect place for a stroll. Enjoy the beautifully landscaped gardens, rock formations, ponds and "nine turn" bridge. There's also a large pavilion for Chinese cultural exhibits.
A lovely peaceful traditional Chinese garden hidden behind a high wall in the middle of busy Macau. No tourists that we could spot - seemed to be mostly locals. Nice pond with fish and turtles and bridges. There is a tea museum on site as well.
We enjoy visiting the Lou Lim Iok Garden when we are in Macau. It is one of several enjoyable attractions northeast of the main historic city center area, and there is no better time to visit this attraction than during Chinese New Year. This year we found another nice exhibition being held in the main pavilion area of the gardens, featuring Lunar New Year traditions of Shanxi and Sichuan provinces. There were very nice displays, art work as well as paper cutting and other demonstrations taking place.Additionally, there was a very nice orchid and plant exhibition taking place at the Lou Lim Iok Garden during while we visited adding pleasant reason for spending some time in this beautiful area of Macau. If you are happen to be in this area during the Chinese New Year Period, its worth you time to see what events are taking place at the nearby Tap Seac Square which hosts several events during the CNY festival period.
What a fantastic garden, so quiet and peaceful, at least it was till our children started running around, playing. but no one seemed bothered.
