Why Leifeng Tower is special ?
Leifeng Pagoda was one of the ten sights of the West Lake because of the Legend of the White Snake. At its most basic, the story tells of a young scholar who falls in love with a beautiful woman, unaware that she is a white snake who has taken on human form. A monk intervenes in order to save the scholar's soul and casts the white snake into a deep well at the Lei Feng Pagoda. Over centuries the story has evolved from horror story to romance with the scholar and the white snake-woman genuinely in love with one another, but such a relationship is forbidden by the laws of Heaven. The legend was existed as oral traditions long before any written compilation. It has since become a major subject of several Chinese opera, films and TV series. As for whether there was a mausoleum below, this was debated for years until finally radar was used to investigate. On March 11, 2001 the mausoleum was excavated and many treasures were found, most notably a gold and silver coated hair of the Buddha.
What to explore at Leifeng Tower?
Leifeng Pagoda was an octagonal, five-storeyed structure built of brick and wood. The body of the pagoda was made of brick, but the eaves, balconies, inside landings and balustrades were made of wood. Stones with the Huayan Scriptures inscribed on them were inlaid on the inner walls of the pagoda. There used to be sixteen sculptures of vajra arhats at the foot of the pagoda, but they were later moved to Jingci Temple.
In addition to panoramic views of the lake and surrounding areas, the tower has the original base of the ancient pagoda, gift shops and cultural displays said to be the richest among the pagodas of the world

Reviews
This tower is worth a visit if only for the views of the lake at the top. I was stared at as being the only foreigner there, but am glad to see some reviews here from non-natives. The tower itself has ancient foundations on display within the newer building which it is. There is an escalator up the steps and a lift inside for those who feel like taking it easy. There is also a legend story about an immortal and her escapades on the land of the mortals, I will not ruin the story for you.
Leifeng Tower is an eight sided Buddist pagoda with five floors that can be viewed from the southern side of West Lake. It was initially built in AD 975, collapsed in 1924 and rebuilt in 2002. It is one of the 10 sights of the West Lake because of the romantic Legend of the White Snake.Leifeng Pagoda has interior elevators and exterior escalators for those who don't want to use the stairs. In addition to panoramic views of the lake and surrounding areas, the tower has the original base of the ancient pagoda, gift shops and cultural displays said to be the richest among the pagodas of the world. The cost is RMB 40 to see the pagoda. It is a good location to view the beauty of the West Lake. Leifeng is lit up at night and is a lovely place to view the sunset.
You must find out the story about baishuzhen then you will excited to see it. But it's lil bit expensive, 40yuan/person. But don't worry to be tired cos there's escalator and lift to go upstairs.
