Why Leechi shop is special ?

Leechi shop is famous for its Taiwan-style mooncakes which have been perfected over the past century. Enjoy them especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival. Traditional methods of making have been preserved such as the use of the pine wood steamer as well as a special frying technique to produce crispy and crunchy Taiwan treats.

Leechi has been around for over a century, and it’s safe to say you can never go wrong with Leechi. This shop can be praised for its dense, buttermilk crust alone. Their authentic pineapple cake also has just the right amount of sweetness. Like Dawn Cake and Vigor Kobo, the fibers are not visible, but the jam has a chunky, jelly-like texture, which we later found out was due to the addition of nata de coco to their filling mixture. As for their traditional cake, it had a thinner crust and chunkier jam. Strangely enough, it was hard to tell whether there was more pineapple or winter melon in the mix.

Pineapple cake is a must buy when visiting Taipei. Leechi is highly recommended by my Taiwanese friends, they have been around for a long time. The store is clean, nice displays, and have many different choices and flavors of cakes and other similar goodies to choose from. I was not sure about which type to buy, their pineapple cake comes in 2 flavors, gourmet( slightly sour, with pineapple chunks, more expensive) and regular( just the right amount of sweetness, combination of pineapple with winter melon). They offered us sample taste tests since we could not decide. Great customer service. They were very patient with us and explained things to us. We also tasted the other cakes and pies they had that are also pretty popular. All were delicious. Note, I had also tasted another company's pineapple cake ( recommended by our driver, slightly less expensive per piece), and I did buy a few boxes to compare( gave them as gifts to my friends and family as well as to serve as comparison),but felt that the cake was too sweet and the crust not as delicate. The verdict is Leechi has the best pineapple cake. Prefer the regular one, but my Mom liked the gourmet one better. The store is not as crowded as their competitor, so service is more personalized. Only one main store, no branches. Leechi is the place to go for Pineapple cake.

After trying pastries at Chia Te Bakery and two other famous bakeries, we decided to try another Leechi. We didn't hold out much hope for Leechi, figured that it was just like the others (good pastries, but nothing wow-ed us). At this point, we already tried many different pastries within 2-3 days. We were a little tired of the pastries, even though they were delicious. While it was not Chia Te's fault that they were so busy, it was a much nicer experience to visit Leechi. There were several other customers in the store. The staff were busy doing their own things, but were very friendly when we asked for help. There were already sampling and cold tea (for summer) near the cash register. We tried their pineapple shortcake and sun cake. I asked questions about how the sesame sun cake would tasted like, the staff offered sample right away. It was a very nice gesture. We ended up loving the sesame sun cake more than their traditional sun cake or the wife cake. We also loved another sun cake like pastrie with coconut on top (called 香妃酥). And their egg yolk pastry (蛋黃酥) is a must have. I finished it in three bites. It was nice to browse and choose casually. I would definitely go back and visit when I am in Taipei again.

Get their mini mung bean moon cakes. The mung bean filing is moist, smooth, not overly sweet, and without additions of savory bits like minced pork or salty egg yolk.
