Why Le Bouchon is special ?

Le Bouchon, set within Nha Trang City, is a humble bistro-style eatery that’s renowned for serving authentic French delicacies. Attracting a steady clientele of French expats and tourists, staple dishes include goat cheese salad, steak with pepper sauce, duck in honey sauce, and piping hot French fries. The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming; if you happen to catch the owner at the bar, he might even offer you a glass of anise liquor pastis. As an added bonus, staff here are very friendly and able to converse in English and French.

After trying various French restaurants in Hanoi and HCM, we were blown away by this restaurant! It was near our hotel, and we thought we would give it a go, which turned out to be one of the best surprises of our trip! For lunch on our first day, we ordered the cheese & meat platter as an entree thinking it would be a small quantity like we receive at home. The plate ended up being big enough for two people for an entire meal! It was filled with a variety of high quality cheeses, meats and accompaniments - I was never able to find the same quality of produce anywhere else in Vietnam. From memory, this plate was about $10USD - a steal considering I would only get a tiny sliver of ONE cheese and a few biscuits for the same price at home. The bread and butter which was complimentary on our table was tasty and a welcome relief after weeks of noodles and stir-frys. For our mains, my wife had a goat's cheese salad and I had the pepper steak. Of the 2 other pepper steaks we had tried prior to this in Vietnam, they had all been disappointing. Le Bouchon's however was awesome! The steak was a good size and not paper thin and the sauce had a good hit of pepper without being too creamy or weak. From what I could tell, the owner/manager was French and the cooks were Vietnamese. It seemed that where the dishes of other French restaurants in Vietnam had been lost in translation, the quality and standard of these dishes were as though a French-trained cook had personally prepared them. It is a credit to the manager and staff. We decided to go back that night for dinner, we loved it so much. I decided to try the Duck in Jungle Honey (approx $20 USD, but I would pay $40USD at home) and my wife had the Pepper steak which she had been craving so much. The duck was one of the most amazing dishes I've ever had! The honey made it sticky and chewy (in a good way), and each mouthful was like heaven. For desert we had the brulee. Again, we had tried this at 2-3 other French restaurants in Vietnam, and were disappointed by their lack of technique which resulted in eggy tasting dishes and thick pieces of sugar. Not at Le Bouchon! It was served in small ramekins with a good layer of glassy sugar on top. The Vietnamese waitress spoke very good English and French, and after a bit of a conversation, she realised we were on our honeymoon. After taking our order, when she returned she said the owner wanted to congratulate us by shouting a free glass of whatever drink we wanted! It was a really nice gesture! We ordered a couple of glasses of the Bordeaux and were surprised when it came out chilled as we were used to drinking it at room temperature. It turned out to be a great idea in the steamy heat and was so refreshing! Their menu contains quite a few dishes containing entrails. I think it must be a specialty of the Lyon area which I was a bit scared of trying. However, given the tastiness and quality of the meals I had, I'm sure had I stayed longer in Nha Trang, I would have tried these dishes as I'm sure they would have been amazing. I've read a few comments on this restaurante of people who had clashed with the staff. I find this really hard to believe, and I think it probably has more to do with the attitude and arrogance of those people than the poor performance of the staff. We went back the next night again for one final meal before we flew out. We would have had lunch there as well, but we had taken a day trip to Vin Pearl Land, a.k.a `It's my life, what can I do'. I know we probably missed out on some other great restaurants in Nha Trang, but sometimes when you find something so good, you just have to keep going back! Although Nha Trang is a very touristy place, I would find a reason to go back there just for this restaurant!
