Why L'etranger Books and Tea is special ?

As you might have guessed by the name of the establishment, this place is part bookshop and part teashop. L’Etranger, Books & Tea in Luang Prabang, Laos is located on Ratsavong Road south of Phousi Hill nearest to Wat Aphay and next to the Hive Bar. It was the first bookshop to open in Luang Prabang. This place functions as a meeting point, offering books to purchase and/or exchange, breakfasts, drinks, pizzas and bar food, free movie viewings nightly, and an art gallery on the second floor. Some books are freely available on loan for local Lao! It’s the first bookshop in Luang Prabang and has been in operation since 2001.

What to explore at L'etranger Books and Tea?

In the bookshop downstairs, you can both buy and borrow books, and they have everything from literary fiction to tourist guides to history books about Laos. Upstairs, you will find a teashop with low tables and loungers so that you can get really comfortable while losing yourself in a travel read. The upper floor is decorated with copies of National Geographic all around, and there is something about the yellow colour of the magazine against the dark wood

As if all of that greatness wasn’t enough, they serve pots of English breakfast tea . You can order delicious Lao and Western food, the staff are unbelievably friendly, and they screen a different movie every night at 7pm.

If you want to rest your feet and just chill out this is the perfect spot. Nice relaxing chairs, rare in these parts, delightful sincere staff and a passionate owner. Excellent Lao Coffee, perfect balance, not bitter and just the right strength. The menu is simple and easy to follow, I had a very tasty evening dish and a real wake up breakfast. This really is one of the few places you can chill out, most cafe places are formal chairs at table settings which is fine for a formal meal, much more relaxing and laid back here. Nice wine too. Staff are excellent, so is Celine! Books are very much part of the business so it's worthwhile if you're a bookworm. Easy to find, just diagonally across the road from the Assie Sports Bar.

During our stay in Luang Prabang this place ended up being the place we chose for our breakfast on several occasions. Nice, simple egg brekky with fruit and coffee/tea was our choice. The place also sells books, but seem to remember the prices were pretty high. Upstairs they show free movies every night of the week. I think this is the 1st business place that was started by a foreigner in LP which in itself is a reason to check it out. Nice and cosy place with friendly staff.
