Why Kyaik-Khauk Paya is special ?
Kyaik-Khauk Paya Pagoda is a well known spiritual and religious hotspot in Thanlyin, which harbors some of the archaic colonial buildings that dates back to the British Raj. This has left a colonial feel to the architecture and the overall ambience. In terms of its history, the pagoda is said to been here for the past 2000 years or more. Over the years there has been several renovation works done that helped to enlarge the pagoda. The temple area is kept open for local visitors and foreign travelers akin to all other Burmese temples. People need to remove their shoes and socks to walk in. Visitors can reach this pagoda within half an hour travelling by car from Thanlyin.
Kyaik-Khauk Paya Pagoda is a place of historical significance. Its history dates back to the rule of Emperor Ashoka and when Gautama Buddha breathed his last. Buddha’s Teachings and the Third Buddhist Council is closely linked to this pagoda in terms of its architecture and essence. Over the years the pagoda has evolved as one of the preferred hubs for Buddhist tourism. Every year Buddhist monks and people belonging to the Buddhist faith visit this pagoda from round the globe.
What to explore at Kyaik-Khauk Paya?
The Kyaik Khauk Paya is a beautiful impressive pagoda in the same style as the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. The pagoda is believed to have been built more than 2,000 years ago, after which it has been enlarged and renovated many times. The base of the pagoda is surrounded by many small golden stupas. The temple area is open to visitors; as in any Burmese temple, please remove shoes and socks. The pagoda is located on a small hill on Kyaik Khauk Pagoda road heading towards Kyauktan in the South East corner of Thanlyin town.
How to get to Kyaik-Khauk Paya?
Thanlyin is located just across the river from Yangon. A taxi from the downtown area to Thanlyin should cost around US$ 5 for a one way trip. If you want to visit several places, hire a taxi for the day. Agree on the price and duration of the trip before setting off.
