The palace was built on swamp ground called Bannerman Pachetokan and later developed into pesangrahan Ayogya. Kraton means the place where the "ratu" (in English: Queen, in Javanese also mean: King) resides. The palace was built according to Javanese Philosophy and is shrouded by mysticism. The spatial arrangement of the palace, including the cityscape of the old city of Yogyakarta, including its architecture, direction of buildings, and objects all belongs to the mythological value and belief system of the Javanese.

My 9 year old and I visited here. Was interesting to see and listen to the guide but would not mark it as a must do. Was very busy with school groups while we were there.
Walking in Keraton Jogja, you must have a tour guide. You can travel around keraton and take a picture. Dont forget tu buy some Batik Tulis from batik gallery near the keraton ( ask to tour guide ), price are not expensive but the batik are great.
So many historical stories & great places inside the Kraton and feels magic. The tour guide is lovely. Not only tells us the histories but also willing to take picture for us. Dont forget to visit Museum Kereta.
