Why Kowloon Walled City Park is special ?

The Kowloon Walled City was orginally a garrison town built by the Qing government in 1847 as a military outpost occupied by several hundred soldiers to reinforce the coastal defence of the region. The Yamen building was originally the administrative office of the Assistant Magistrate of Kowloon. The building is a three-hall structure. The middle hall was the office while the rear block served as the officer's residence. After the departure of the Qing officials in 1899, the Yamen building was used by different religious groups including a home for the aged, home for widows and orphans, school and clinic. In 1996 the Yamen was preserved and restored to remind the people of its historical past.

What to explore at Kowloon Walled City Park?

There are water features and numerous different gardens including one of statues of the Chinese zodiac, a chess garden and garden of the four seasons. At the heart of the garden is a fully restored Yamen and there are fascinating displays about the Walled City itself: first-hand accounts, photos and architectural renderings, historical explanations for you to really understand the history behind this unique area.

The park is great fun for younger visitors too with the ponds, old cannons, narrow pathways and gardens providing plenty to spark their imaginations. There is also a playground on the entrance to the park at Junction Road which is perfect for the kids to run around and burn off some energy before wandering to the more refined and tranquil gardens.

It is easy to spend hours just walking and exploring the pathways, beautiful architecture and remaining artefacts from the Walled City and the creation of the park has ensured that one of Hong Kong’s most interesting and historical areas will be preserved and enjoyed for years to come.

Good Chinese garden in the heart of Kowloon. Not many tourists come here but definitely worth the trip. Many scenes for tv Chinese classical dramas have been shot here. Beautiful garden to walk in.

This enclave was never included in the 1898 lease of the New Territories. It was known for its vice, prostitution and gambling. In the 1980's the Hong Kong government acquired the area. The residents were rehoused, the slums pulled down, a beautiful park was created. The almshouse contains displays and information on the history of the walled city. There are also the remnants of two of the original gates. We particularly enjoyed the exhibition especially watching the video interviews of residents talking about life in the walled city. We also loved walking around the park, enjoying the pavilions, hedges and ponds and watching the locals enjoying their Sunday.

Plenty of information on the old walled city and the walled city demolished in the 1990's. Plenty of garden space and a few old building which are now the museum section of the park.
