Why Khao Soi Khun Yai is special ?
One of Chiang Mai’s most famous contributions to Thai cuisine is khao soi, (or soy), noodle soup. The classic version combines two noodle varieties: flat wheat noodles, (tagliatelli-ish in form) and deep-fried crispy noodles, in a spicy coconut chicken curry. The soup is served with a slice of lime, roast chilli paste and pickled cabbage.

Best khao soi ever! Only open from 10.00 till 14.00, gets very crowded, so be quick! Tough to find, but it's worth it! It really is! 30 baht for a pot of gold.
There is nothing fancy about Khao Soi Khun Yai. It is basically just your normal roadside place with a few tables under an open-air roof sort of place. You know, like any other fast food joints in any city in Thailand. So you have to wonder why there is a constant stream of Thais and foreigners coming by cars and tuk tuks to eat lunch here, which is open only four hours a day from 10.00-14.00 hrs. The answer is simple: this place serves up very delicious and very cheap Khao Soi and noodles. Khao Soi is the specialty here and it does that in excellent fashion. The noodles are sufficiently thick, but the star here is the curry soup, which is spicier than many of its competitors. I had beef Khao Soi which had small but tender beef pieces but the soup was outstanding. There are plenty of Khao Soi places in Chiang Mai, but Khao Soi Khun Yai is still on the non-touristy side of things where throngs of tour groups do not descend upon it and you have to wait in line for a table. It is tasty and fantastic value for money.
When I decided to head to Chiang Mai, a friend had told me that I HAD to have khao soi - this amazing curry noodles dish that was only available in Chiang Mai.I decided to try all sorts of khao soi where ever I saw it when I was walking around the city area, but I had specially come all the way to this one - Grandma's Khao Soi - as my friend had recommended it strongly and said I must try this one.On my last day in Chiang Mai, my friend and I trouped all the way to this area to check out one of the old city gates and wall corner followed by my last khao soi lunch. It is a bit hard to find, as its a small little gate and sign only. So you need to look out for it between two temples. It is most definitely a place to go and try the khao soi, there is chicken and beef (from what I can gather), so I tried the beef and it was pretty good with the gravy being quite tasty. Service is a bit slow, but its worth the wait...so don't go when you are starving.A good end to my khao soi journey.
Some say this is the place for the best Khao Soi. I've had khao soi at only a few places and this is the best I've had. So I went back again and again. It's really not all that hard to find if you've seen a photo of the entry.
