Why Khao San Road is special ?

The popular book 'The Beach' famously described Khao San Road as "the centre of the backpacking universe". Judging by the truth-seeking travellers who converge here to shop, exchange tales and prepare for their next stint on the backpacker trail, it's a phrase that sums it up pretty much perfectly.

Packed into a 1km long strip are countless budget guesthouses and mid-range hotels, internet cafes, swanky bars and clubs, restaurants, massage parlours, travel agents, bookshops, market stalls, tattoo shops and much, much more. So much in fact, that the people, peddlers and party spirit have spilled over into nearby Soi Rambuttri. With its carefree, anything-goes vibe, it's quite unlike anywhere else in Bangkok, and so infectious is its atmosphere it's also popular with locals, especially young hipsters and art students.

The Pad Thai is subtly spicy with a chili aftershock; the deep-fried garlic chicken crisp but oily. If food were all smiles and charm, Khao San Road would rate four stars and not one. Read more:

Sam Roas (three flavours) pad thai = amazing. Compliment it with an order of the garlic shrimp appetizers, cooked to perfection.

perhaps at the age of 42 places like this are best left alone, on the other hand the 20 year old crew were loving it. My Thai girlfriend wanted to take me there for a few drinks so off we went. Its not the place for me, I don't like being pestered, hassled and pressured into sitting somewhere for a drink. The drinks were cheap and ordinary and when cheap drinks are on offer it attracts a certain type of tourist.

Great place for food and for shopping! Area is a long strip of shops that consists of mainly clothing/accessories and food. There are drinking bars where they sell buckets of alcohol but they shut at 12am when the police arrive. Be wary of thieves and also people who try to take you to an "extra" stop as it is a scam! Always ask for direct route there/home. Bargain your price for the items you want!!
