Why Kegon Falls is special ?

Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no taki), almost 100 meter tall, is the most famous of Nikko's many beautiful waterfalls. In fact, it is even ranked as one of Japan's three most beautiful falls, along with Nachi Waterfall in Wakayama Prefecture and Fukuroda Waterfall in Ibaraki Prefecture.

Kegon Waterfall is the only exit for the waters of Lake Chuzenji. It can be seen from a free observation platform that is easily accessible on foot, as well as from a paid platform at the base of the falls. The paid platform is accessed via a 100 meter deep elevator and offers the more impressive views. The sight of Kegon Waterfall in combination with Lake Chuzenji can be enjoyed from Akechidaira Observatory, which is accessible by ropeway from Akechidaira Plateau.

Kegon Waterfall is also a popular autumn color spot. The trees around the waterfall are usually most colorful from mid to late October. In the winter, the waterfall is impressive as well, when it freezes almost completely solid.

What to explore at Kegon Falls?

There are two observation deck from top and bottom. You have to pay to enter the bottom deck. On the weekend, there are many people visit. You might have hard time to find parking.

Kegon Falls are located at Lake Chūzenji (source of the Oshiri River) in Nikkō National Park in the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows. About twelve smaller waterfalls are situated behind and to the sides of Kegon Falls, leaking through the many cracks between the mountain and the lava flows.

At 97 m high, it is one of Japan's three highest waterfalls. In the autumn, the traffic on the road from Nikko to Chūzenji can sometimes slow to a crawl as visitors come to see the fall colors.

We were fortunate to visit when autumn colours had commenced; not a full show but magnificent nevertheless. The area was stunning - a lovely walk up to the top of the gently sloping falls and back again. We were surrounded by schoolchildren who were anxious to talk and joke with us, high five and have photos taken with us; they were great and added to our enjoyment. The falls are certainly a great beauty spot and well worth a visit.

The view is great from the top. Even after taking the elevator you still have stairs at the bottom which aren't a totally restful walk.
