Why Karaweik Palace is special ?
Karaweik Palace, the Landmark of Yangon City, open to all, is a showcase of Myanmar Arts, one of many sites ecouraging visitors to Yangon. Karaweik Palace, which is 39meters wide and 82 meters long of sophisticated contemporary function space to accommodate any event from intimate board meetings to trade shows and elaborate weddings. A truly unique palace in the centre of Yangon. Enjoy an evening international buffet with an amazing cultural show.
The floating Karaweik Restaurant on Kandawgyi (Royal) Lake is one of the landmarks of Yangon. This modern architecture of a mythical creature Karaweik Hall was constructed in 1972. This whole building was gilded with gold about 20 years ago. Karaweik Hall will serve lunch and dinner with Myanmar, Chinese, Eastern and Western cuisine at moderate prices. It is also an excellent idea to examine the beauty of this royal barge and the stunning view of the Shwedagon. Traditional dance performances are normally held here in the evenings.
What to explore at Karaweik Palace?
Karaweik hall has been designed to resemble a royal boat, with two graceful birds and a highly ornate and detailed roof. The front of the boat looks like a karaweik, a mythological bird from Burmese folklore and legends. It has a golden ball in its beak. The rear of the boat is the bird’s tail. Golds and reds are the main colours and a statue of a spirit sits on top of the tail. There is a small stupa, and whilst the structure is an impressive sight by day, at night time it is illuminated rather enchantingly. The lights shimmer and shine off the water creating a really magical vision of loveliness.
It is a very modern creation, and one that cannot help but impress all those who set eyes upon it. Despite looking like wood from a distance, it is actually made out of concrete that has been covered in gold gilding.
Although the structure looks like a boat sitting on the water, many guests are surprised to learn that it is actually a fixed structure that is firmly anchored in place.
How to get to Karaweik Palace?
The Karaweik Hall is found in the South East corner of Kandawgyi Lake a few hundred meters East of the Shwedagon Pagoda. A taxi from downtown Yangon should cost around US$ 3 - 5.

Tips for you
This was a great evening in Yangon and the best option. The show and buffet started early at 6:30 pm with both great. The elephant dance with two men in a large elephant costume was the high lite of the evening. The entrance path onto the stationary ship was nice with 6 or 7 small booths with uniquely dressed women and a small taste of a local items was very nice. I was impressed as the exterior of the land ship being so well kept an painted compared to other places in the town. The buffet was very large with lots of selections. The price of $36 was a little high for the area but well worth it.
Very Nice Place to have dinner and to see traditional Burmese dance performance, The dinner is Buffet, book in advance to get a good seat, it is open from 6pm to 9pm, the price 20,000 Kyats.
