Why Kandal Market is special ?
Kandal Market is a genuine local market that is located in the center of Phnom Penh close to Riverside. The Khmer name of the market is Phsar Kandal which translates to “market in the middle” or “central market”, not to be confused with the “real” Central Market, Phsar Thmei.
Kandal Market does not look like much from the outside but when you get further in it is relatively clean and fresh, even though the walkways are small and narrow. The Market is filled with goods like clothes, jewelry, shoes, bags but the majority of it is fresh food for the locals.
Street 13 | Ang Eng Blvd, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Phsar Kandal, as the locals call it, has changed it's appearance over the last decade just a tad. There is now a much bigger variety of goods and unfortunately the Chinese junk has found a way onto Cambodia's street markets. It offers still a very genuine shopping experience and the selection has improved. Prices are fairly low, if you compare the goods to other markets. Plenty of photo opportunities here, so bring your cam and watch it well anywhere in Cambodia. Food offered is mainly geared as take-away, but a few vendors offer plastic chairs and folding tables. This is not a gourmet area, but you can get impressions on Khmer staple foods.Toddlers garments are half price here, than what you fork over now in Russian Market - very inexpensive are also classic Khmer headscarves and the shops towards Norodom Blvd. sell the cheapest booze in town (0,7 ltr. longneck "Mekhong" liquor for 3.000 Riels, beers start at 1.500 Riels.)
Kandal Market is a genuine local market. Expect to be jostled and bumped as you explore the tight little market walkways. The space is filled with goods, the majority of it being food for the locals. In places the food spill out onto the walkways, so you find yourself stepping over baskets of vegetables, fish and other goods. The congestion is made worse by locals riding their motos through those same little walkways – only in Cambodia!Phasar Kandal is a wonderful insight into local Cambodia, with all the sights, smells and chaos that go along with it.
One of my favourite places for eating a tasty soup, seeing kids swinging in hammocks and buying amazing fruit
