Why Jungmun Daepo Coast & Jusangjeolli Cliff is special ?
Jusangjeolli Cliffs refer to the set of blackish, rock pillars of rectangular or hexagonal shapes on the east coast of Jungmun Tourist Resort. As if carved by stonemasons, the pillars are evidence of nature’s awesome power.
If you follow the farm road 600 m to the southwest from Depo-dong, at the end of the pine tree forest is a cliff. At the base of this cliff is the Jisatgae Coast along with the imposing stone pillars
Most commonly expressed as vertical columnar jointing, the formations are created via sudden cooling of lava that shrinks in mass. The sight of waves crashing against the columns is both serene and beautiful. On days with rough weather, waves can rise as high as 20 meters.
What to explore at Jungmun Daepo Coast & Jusangjeolli Cliff?
The Jusangjeolli Cliff, a majestic pile of stone pillars, was formed when Mt. Hallasan erupted thousands of years ago. When the molten lava made its way to the Jungmun Sea, it cooled, cracked then contracted to form fractures of enormous hexagonal stones. This remarkable stone formation along the coast is one of the most sought-after attractions of the island. At the cliff’s base lies the Jisatgae Coast with its equally imposing rock columns.
There is a park created close by, parallel to the imposing cliffs, where visitors can enjoy a 2km walk offering beautiful views of the pillars. This park is well maintained, featuring different types of palm trees and beautiful flowers. Its most remarkable aspect is the multi-level observation deck which allows various viewing points of the Jusangjeolli Cliff. The area is very spacious, and there is always a continuous flow of visitors coming and going to enjoy the mystical view of the cliff.

Spectacular rock formations by the sea. You can also try some seafood inside the park
“Fascinating basalt column shapes” Having always wanted to see the cliffs off of Northern Ireland, it was a pleasant surprise to see these interesting hexagonal basalt column shapes on the coastline of Jeju Island! There is a wooden walkway/stairway with informational signs along the way. Restrooms are near the entrance/ticket booth. There are typically cart/street vendors hawking various foods/fruits/veggies and other items here and there throughout. There was a local photographer with his work (varying in size from postcards to poster-size photographs) which were of breathtakingly beautiful scenery around Jeju Island. I would definitely recommend this as a stop on your trip around Jeju Island.
