Why Jalan Malioboro is special ?

Jalan Malioboro (English: Malioboro Street) is a major shopping street in Yogyakarta, Indonesia; the name is also used more generally for the neighborhood around the street. It lies north-south axis in the line between Yogyakarta Kraton and Mount Merapi. This is in itself is significant to many of the local population, the north south orientation between the palace and the volcano being of importance. The street is the centre of Yogyakarta's largest tourist district surrounded with many hotels and restaurants nearby. Sidewalks on both sides of the street are crowded with small stalls selling a variety of goods. In the evening several open-air streetside restaurants, called lesehan, operate along the street. Less obvious to the tourist, but more for the local population, side streets, lanes and structures that lead on to Malioboro are as important as the street itself.

Malioboro Street Flea MarketA lot of junk clothes and knick-knacks. Nice local ambiance but not much else. We walked up & down Malioboro several times but could not get to buy anything worthwhile. Worse, my wife was bitten by a horse so be extra careful when walking past the horse carriages.

Malioboro is a shopping haven for bargain hunting tourists. Definitely one stop shopping in Yogyakarta for almost anything you want to buy (traditional local foods and snacks, batiks, shirts, artifacts) within very reasonable (and still negotiable) prices. Don't like haggling? You could go straight to Mirota located on the southern part of Malioboro Rd. to buy those in fixed prices. While on Malioboro, try to ride on becak (tricycle) and horse carriage around the area, and snap a pic or two next to Malioboro road sign in Javanese letters (similar to "Iamsterdam" in Amsterdam).

This road is very long. If you want to find some souvenirs, come here. Price is so cheap, but make sure you make your choice first, because maybe you'll fins another seller has a same model with cheaper price. Yes, all sellees here have same stuff, but different model. If you're not enjoy it, it's okay, it haa another things to be oferred. Night orchestra was just sound very professional and entertained, you can choose youf own song by give them some money. Make sure you bring some coins if you go to this place, many beggars and pengamen are around.
