Why Inlay Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is special ?

Inlay Lake Wildlife Sanctuary is a wetland sanctuary and located in Nyaung Shwe, Pinlaung and Peh Kon Townships of Southern Shan State. It covers an area of 642.32 square miles (1663.51km2) and was established in 1985 and designated as one of ASEAN Heritage Parks in 2003. This sanctuary is to conserve and protect natural vegetation, wetland birds and fresh water fishes in Inlay Sanctuary. This site is located in the Thanlwin River basin at the Shan Plateau in East Myanmar at an elevation of 1,300 meters above sea level (19˚46' - 20˚38' N and 96˚47'- 97˚6' E). Nyaungshwe is the common entry point.

What to explore at Inlay Lake Wildlife Sanctuary?

Inle Lake is best known for water birds and migratory birds and for the floating agriculture farms of the lake. 255 woodland birds, 90 wetland birds, 59 fish species, 3 turtle species, 94 butterfly species, 25 amphibian and reptile species, and several plant species including 184 orchid and 12 algae species are recorded in this wetland sanctuary. It was reported that this Sanctuary could be a nesting place for the globally endangered sarus crane. Visitors may observe aquatic plants and animals, and butterflies, do trekking, and visit historical pagodas, such as Phaung Daw OO, Alowdaw Pauk, Shwe In Daing, Taung Do around the lake and other pagodas in the surrounding hill.

Yangon via Thazi to Shwe Nyaung, 320 miles (512 km) by train and Shwe Nyaung to Nyaung Shwe, 10 miles (16 km) by car.

  • December and January are the best times, although some birds, like the spectacular pheasant-tailed Jacana, are best seen in their breeding plumage during the rainy season.
