Why Huong Lai is special ?
Huong Lai is a private, self-funded restaurant that employs former street children and disadvantaged youth and provides them with vocational training so they can build a better future. Around 80% of our graduates are now working in the hospitality sector, some with five-star hotels. Most of Huong Lai's service and kitchen staff are former street children, orphans or from poor families.
What Huong Lai serves, though, is traditional Vietnamese cuisine: Homely food that arrives in communal plates, best downed with copious amounts of fragrant rice. Since opening 10 years ago, Huong Lai has built a reputation as one of Ho Chi Minh City's top eateries. Its dozen tables invariably fill each lunch and dinner with both tourists and locals. Some may come for the novelty but leave convinced of its culinary merits.
Must try dishes:
Tofu stuffed with pork mince
Tangy sauteed chicken with lemongrass
Yam and potato soup
Pork stewed in claypot
Grilled eggplant with spring onions
Prawns in coconut milk and turmeric

Reviews
This place is run for a very good cause - the staff is former street kids that are getting training in hospitality and English. What a great place to eat a big meal and enjoy a bottle or two of wine!
We chose this restaurant based on previous reviews and were pleased we did. The staff were attentive, pleasant and engaging. The food was fresh, vibrant, well presented, and most of all very tasty. We only wish this wasn't our last night in Saigon, as we would definitely go back. A great intitiatve by the owners, refreshing to see disadvantaged young people being given an opportunity to gain some purpose and direction. Do yourself a favour, check it out.
