Why House of Sampoerna is special ?
House of Sampoerna is the old Dutch building, used to house an Orphanage in the early 1860’s. After it was purchased in the 1930’s by the founder of the Sampoerna cigarette company it became the biggest cigarette factory in Surabaya. One of the biggest attractions is to watch a thousand ladies hand roll cigarettes at amazing speeds. You will also find a small museum and a very good café and art gallery. Evan was especially piqued by the old bikes, motorcycles and carts and we all enjoyed a very good and very reasonably priced lunch at their café.
What to explore at House of Sampoerna?
The building itself is a wonderful 19th-century Dutch structure, originally an orphanage but later converted into a theatre (indeed Charlie Chaplin once dropped by). The former lobby is now the museum and is something of a shrine to the Sampoerna empire. It has exhibits on the use of cloves and the history of kretek in Indonesia, alongside uniforms and drums of the Sampoerna marching band and other quirky company curios. There's also an incredible collection of cigarette lighters, holders and cases, mainly from Europe.
Upstairs there’s a bird’s-eye perspective of the factory’s shop floor, where hundreds of women hand roll, trim and pack the Dji Sam Soe brand (banned from most countries as the tar content is so strong). The fastest rollers here churn out 4000 cigarettes a day, their fingers a blur of motion. Because air-conditioning can affect the tobacco (and fans would blow it around) it's a steamy, humid workplace.
You’ll be accompanied by a highly informative, English-speaking guide; the complete tour lasts between 30 minutes and an hour depending on your interest. Note that the museum is open late, but the factory section closes around 3pm.
After your visit, be sure to have a drink in the excellent neighbouring cafe-restaurant and consider a trip on the company's intriguing sightseeing bus tour, the Surabaya Heritage Track.
How to get to House of Sampoerna?
From Tunjungan Plaza & Sheraton Hotel:
3.3 miles/5.4 kms, 12 minutes
Take Embong Malang Road in front of the Plaza/Hotel and make a right turn at the first intersection, toward Blauran Road. Further 300 meters, at the big intersection with traffic light, keep going straight toward Bubutan Road (better to take fast lane on the right). At another big intersection with traffic light, keep going straight and pass the Hero Monument on your right hand side. At the end of the road, follow the “House of Sampoerna” sign, making a left turn onto Indrapura Road. From this point, keep following the “House of Sampoerna” signs; you are about 2,500 meters or 5 minutes away from House of Sampoerna.
Taking the City Toll Way:
(From outside Surabaya, Surabaya Airport or other parts of the city near the toll way)3.9 miles/6.3 kms, 15 minutes from the toll’s exit
Take the toll way northbound toward Gresik (Tanjung Perak). Exit at Pasar Turi/Gresik and follow the Pasar Turi exit ramp onto Raya Dupak Road (Note: Take the Pasar Turi exit ramp, do not turn left onto the Gresik exit ramp). At the intersection with traffic light, keep going straight, still on Raya Dupak Road. Further 1,250 meters, you will cross the railroad tracks and reach another intersection. Keep going straight onto Tembaan Road. At the big intersection, make a left turn toward Bubutan Road. The Hero Monument is right in front of you, or on your right hand side after you make the left turn toward Bubutan Road. After turning right, at the end of Bubutan Road, follow

Tips for you
Visiting Surabaya for the first time, a visit to the House of Sampoerna was on our list of places to visit. A taxi ride through the fascinating streets of this sprawling city is always fun and we were surprised to find an impressive stately building tucked away in a lane way next to the old prison. We were greeted at the door by delightful young hosts and the glorious aroma of cloves. Being totally opposed to smoking and knowing the terrible health hazards of this habit, I was still fascinated by the process of making these handmade cigarettes and the history of the company. A bonus of the place is the free bus tours of the city and the lovely cafe where we had a delightful lunch and museum adjoining the factory. We took the colonial buildings tour and thoroughly enjoyed it. I definitely recommend the visit.
This place's very unique and beautiful. It's near my boarding house so sometimes i visit this place with my friend.
