Why Hosenin is special ?

Hosenin is one of three Monzeki temple of the Tendai sect. Hosenin is also the nice temple with warm atmosphere. This temple is famous for the spectacular nature through four seasons. It is the view and experience that is awesome inspiring, home to a 700 year old pine tree, this tree is magnificent, it has been kept up and shaped with the love seen from a bonsai master. With quiet and peaceful and serenity atmosphere, this temple will take you away from the noisy world. This temple has the spectacular view. Surrounding by several nice gardens, the temple becomes more mysterious.

What to explore at Hosenin?

Visiting Hosenin, you can enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. You are led to the main part of the temple and recommended to sit on a red carpeted area, where you are then served tea and a cake. From the tea room, you can see overlooking a 700 year old tree, it is really spectacular.

There is a small moss garden, with a bamboo grove feature and here again more of that water. From there, you can see a lovely view of the valley, but in this intimate space they have also created a rock garden, this could be easily missed as it's on the other side of the ancient tree. In this small space they recreated the islands of japan, mounds of sand become small islands and mountains, this felt like a garden that did actually change often, there was a playful atmosphere here as opposed to the sacred serenity of the ancient tree and its surroundings.

I read the posts from here and decided to go to this place. It's not easy to get here. Because need to take public bus for at least 40mins ride from Kyoto to Ohara which is outskirt from the city. Need to do some homework and research on how to go to Ohara. But it's worth the effort to get there. I noticed that most of the visitors are locals. Got one or two tour group but not much crowd. Most of the visitors are visiting Sanzennin temple. Only a few will visit Hosenin. When i asked the local how to get to Hosenin, they seems like couldn't get it. The pronunciation should be "Ho-Sen-In", and not "Ho-Sen-Nin". Make sure u can pronounce correctly when asking for direction. It's a small temple. Quiet and peaceful and serenity. You can visit Sanzennin at the same time. Sanzenin is much bigger temple. Ohara is a quiet and peaceful town. While walking towards the temple from the bus terminal, there're some stalls selling souvenirs and food. Looks good. It's a worthwhile place to go, when big crowd are in the other famous temples in kyoto.
