Why Hogonin Temple is special ?
Hogon-in Temple was built in 1461 as a sub-temple of Tenryu-ji by Hosokawa Toriyuki, a member of the government of the Muromachi shogun. The temple was originally built in on expansive grounds in the Kamigyo-ku district of Kyoto (now the centre of the city). Like many temples in Kyoto, it was damaged by the fires of the Onin war. It was later reconstructed in the late 16th century, only to be moved to its present location in Arashiyama in the Meiji period.
The pamphlet says that the temple large zen garden, called "the garden of the lion's roar", was created by a zen priest in the Muromachi period. This is slightly puzzling, as the temple was later burn down and moved to two successive locations. How did they move the garden without changing it? Mystery... The garden is a nice place to stroll and has some unique features such as the cobblestones dry landscape, near the entrance.
What to explore at Hogonin Temple?
The temple enshrines 33 statues of Kannon, which are said to be "as efficient" as the "traditional 33-stop Kannon pilgrimage route". In front of the temple entrance is another set of statues called the Arashiyama Arhats (Arhats are not strange hats; they were the closest and highest disciples of Buddha). The garden inside the Hogonin Temple is a pond stroll style garden known as ‘Shishiku no Niwa’ (its mean Lion’s Roar Garden) that incorporates the surrounding scenery into its design. The magnificent stone is a symbol of this garden. Its figure invokes the creature. Rich moss covers up the surface of the stone. Deep red maple leaves create a contrast with moss on the ground. The garden itself represents the teaching place of Buddha, where truth is thought through nature, by listening to the birds singing and the sound of the wind. While visitors admire and explore beauty of the garden, a teaching of Buddha is experienced at the same time.

Tips for you
In one of the subtemple of Tenryu-ji, it will be a special public only spring and autumn, towards the time of the autumn leaves are crowded with people. For foliage, it is really impressive, red of maple shine well in moss garden. In conjunction with the publication of the garden, but the main hall of the sliding door paintings have also been published in a separate charge, since it is not necessarily there is a cultural heritage term value in what has been produced recently, I think that it is sufficient only admission of the garden.
