Why Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art is special ?
The museum itself encompasses 100,000 sq.ft., large by Japanese standards. In consideration of the view from the city, 60% of that has been put below ground. As the building becomes, in effect, the roof of the site, it exceeds 660 feet in length, and to facilitate circulation, has many staircases which by plan are placed redundantly to create a more artistic space.
The whole building effectively employs the axes created by its relation to other facilities, which are all tied together in the approach plaza in the centre of the building. And, with so much of the building below ground, the earth has been culled from the sides of the building at places and large openings placed in the outside in the lower levels to mitigate the sunken effect on visitors.
The design of the roof and the wall of this building was metaphorically introduced from the traditional Japanese warehouse »kura« in the 19th Century. As for the materials of the facade, stones, tiles, and aluminum are used all together, effectively creating the additional atmosphere of the future to the traditional elements.

Tips for you
This is a very moving and interesting museum to visit. It looks at the perspectives from the entire city (e.g. A miniature version of the area that was affected) and also on an individual level (clothes and stories about certain people who were affected). It educates you on how the bomb was made and about nuclear weapons which was quite interesting. The staff were very friendly and everything that was written in Japanese was also written in English.
Really excellent contemporary art museum. The current special exhibit has some excellent works by Liechtenstein, Warhol, Bacon and Richter.
