As long as you're not freaked out by playful kind of boisterous golden retriever called Stephen and border collie called Shisha (or was it Shanxi?) who will pester you endlessly to throw a leaf to chase, this place has real charm. Friendly staff. Pleasant decking/patio. Characterful bar/common area. Good music. Well-priced drinks - and dorms. Quality food. Slightly off the lake, and initially a bit tricky to locate. There are quite a few small hostels in this leafy neighborhood, for a change of scene to pop into for a drink or a meal, but my inability to find a wee shop for provisions was a pain. The loos are squats but, though hardly spotless, regularly maintained. My main gripe is that the mattresses are barely thicker than sheets, so sleep quality definitely not great. Chinese mattresses are notoriously unpadded, but other hostels have been deep pan compared with these thin-and-crispies. A comfortable night is important to a traveller's energy levels, so a shame to detract from an otherwise charming place.
I stayed in a dorm with a comfy bed, showers are clean with hot water. The hostel is situated not too far from the west lake, it's a lovely area, very calm and relaxing, the air is clean, ideal for nature lovers. there's a bus stop not too far (bus 4) that will take you to subway. The staff was very friendly and helpful, you could tell they really care about your well-being.
