Why Hafuu Honten is special ?
Hafuu Honten combines the tradition of Japanese cuisine with a modern atmosphere. The restaurant pairs delicious wagyu steak with succulent seafood to deliver an unforgettable culinary experience. The wagyu served at Hafuu comes straight from Kyushu and, more specifically, from the Kumamoto region. This region is known to be one of the few remaining in Japan where cows are still allowed to graze freely, producing some of the most succulent meat in the world. The wagyu at Hafuu is famous for having an intense buttery flavour and tenderness. For the meat lovers out there, Hafuu is an unmissable stop on Kyoto’s culinary trail. The famous dishes include roast beef, shrimp appetizer, cut of sirloin, fillet of wagyu beef and so on.

Tips for you
I've always been a bit weary of the restaurant rankings on Tripadvisor for any given city based on past experiences, so I definitely approached this with a bit of skepticism despite the fact the vast majority of Hafuu Honten's reviews are 5/5 and they are ranked #2 in a well-known foodie town at the time of writing this. Certainly they must be doing something right. And they are: the food here is amazing. If you read into my review history on restaurants, you will rarely see me toss that term around. But Hafuu Honten is by far and away one of the best steaks I have ever had. Period. For starters, I recommend making a reservation for dinner by simply calling them up (there is a staff member there who speaks fluent English as they spent time in the U.S. growing up so you won't run into a language barrier problem). The restaurant has a wonderful cozy neighborhood setting and atmosphere. Chances are you will be seated at the long wooden bar in front of the grill and cooking area. Menus are in English and aren't overwhelming with choices. As a beef tenderloin lover, I was initially going to select that but was talked into the Wagyu sirloin steak instead (same price). Wise decision that paid off! The meat was melt in your mouth buttery; such an insane and wonderful umami flavor. There were some dipping sauces and salt that came with it but I hardly used any of them as the steak was that wonderful and flavorful on its own. It was mind bogglingly good! I had it cooked medium rare and the only thing I will do differently next time -and lets face it, there will be a next time for sure- is get it cooked a touch more. Service here was pretty good. But the thing that really is the icing on the cake with this place is the prices for the great quality that you get. I had a half salad, beer, ice cream and wagyu steak for under $50 USD. As they state on their website, the owner's home is a meat shop in Kyoto, so that's how they can offer such great steak at great prices. Essentially, they are the distributor and the restaurant does not have a middle man to deal with meaning those savings are passed on to the customers. This place was so good that I actually came back again before I left for their steak sandwich lunch set which was also great (a deep fried and breaded steak on a sandwich). If you love steak and are in Kyoto you MUST put this place on your list.
Awesome lunch combos. Very tasty wagyu beef. English menus available
Holy crap. Wagyu isn't food, it's a way of life. My wife likes steak but not the way I LOVE steak, but her socks were knocked off. Go here for lunch so you can pay a more reasonable price and come back the next day and get the steak sandwiches to go! DO NOT leave Japan before you eat the Wagyu! It's tender, it's fatty, it's one of a kind. You can go to Mastro's or Ruth Chris in the US and have a bigger rib-eye with more seasoning that you may enjoy just as much, but it won't really be the SAME experience. Don't pass up your chance to have this on your trip.
