Why Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater is special ?

Golden Water Puppet Theatre is located on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, just a short distance from the Reunification Palace in the Labour Cultural House. The water puppet theatre hosts a 50-minute show, featuring marionette puppets in water. Twice a day, this red velvet covered auditorium seats around 200 visitors. The singers/musicians are set off to the right side of the stage, sitting in their traditional au dais. The performance is about the ancient origins of Vietnam and its rural upbringings, with a splash of the mythical goddesses, dragons and talking fish that go along with the traditional stories. The show is entirely in Vietnamese and although the show’s pamphlet gives some information on the show, it still can be hard to follow. A programme for the show would be helpful but, unfortunately, you don’t get much assistance. The music and puppetry is still enjoyable though; just think of it as a Vietnamese puppet opera.

What to explore at Golden Dragon Water Puppet Theater?

It is about the ancient origins of Vietnam and its rural upbringings, with a splash of the mythical goddesses, dragons and talking fish that go along with the traditional stories.

The orchestra of this modern theater consisted of professional musicians and singers, sitting in their traditional au dais, are set off to the left and right sides of the stage. They play traditional musical instruments like drums, clarinets, cymbals, Chinese guitars, bamboo flutes, zithers, two-stringed violins and, the most noteworthy instrument of them all, a monochord with a single string which can create wonderful tune. The singers not only accompany the orchestra but also converse with puppets, especially with the humorous and intelligent puppet Uncle Tễu which functions as the master of ceremonies. The show is split into around 12 acts, each telling a separate story.

As in other traditional Vietnamese performing arts such as chèo (popular opera), tuồng (classical opera) and cải lương (renovated opera), the program started with a boisterous music composition to attract attention and create a joyful atmosphere. The colorful puppets danced and performed numerous interesting items on the shimmering water surface of the water stage in the theater, accompanied by animated music and singing. They even performed acrobatics, spectacular acts which cannot be done by modern robots. We saw no puppeteer, no machines, instruments or controlling strings and poles. By grandson Kyle was spellbound by the performance.

The traditional music and sounds effects are delightful. The puppet show itself is truly awesome...fun and funny! Not only are you entertained but you get a glimpse into an ancient art form in Vietnam. It is clear that the people controlling the puppets are artists and very skilled. We were enthralled by the show - and in total awe of all that goes into the performance.

The water puppet show was pretty average for me. The show will take about 50 minutes and starts quite punctually. You can purchase tickets at the counter on that day.Overall, it’s an easily forgettable one. I'm writing this barely a week after watching the show and I can't really recall what happened. There is supposedly some story line in the show, which I don’t quite get.Just take note that you may get wet if you sit in the front rows. Normally they will allocate those seats to westerners or tourists, probably this is to keep them more entertained during the show.

I couldn't quite figure out how they did it - but needless to say I was impressed. The stories they told were not in English but still simple enough to follow. A few funny moments had the crowd laughing and also a few moments where I was impressed with the skills of the people controlling the puppets.Worth a look.
