Why Fengsheng Restaurant is special ?

Feng Sheng Restaurant reserves the good old way of cooking and serves the traditional countryside dishes with simple but fresh ingredients to bring you back to the good old time, which reminds you of granny's cooking.

Feng Sheng Restaurant is a Taiwanese cuisine restaurant very suitable for family gathering, a la carte or friends gathering.

The juicy, plump meat of the steamed milkfish fillets (煎虱目魚肚, NT$180) is delicately sweet, especially when drizzled with a little bit of lime juice, while the five flavor calamari (五味中卷, NT$160) is cooked just right and tasted delicious when dipped in cocktail sauce and wasabi.

The dried vegetable pork (菜乾肉, NT$160) is made with sprigs of dried cauliflower stewed and then served with chunks of pork. The cauliflower, firm and a bit crunchy, soaks up the rich, savory sauce and is complemented well by the tender, fatty chunks of pork.

Another pork dish, but with a completely different set of flavors and textures, is the taro root ribs (芋頭排骨, NT$160). The braised ribs, cooked until the meat slides off the bone, are nestled on top of a mound of mashed taro root. I wondered if the taro root would be too mushy to work well with the tender meat, but its soft, slightly grainy texture and sweet, mellow flavor actually provided a good contrast.

We (9 in total) after enjoyed an outing on a Monday night came to this “country” restaurant which has been famous for its home-cooking styled dishes. Fong Sheng Restaurant (豐盛食堂, means “abundance”) located at the famed Yon-Kan Street (永康街) district, looked plain and ordinary, nothing particular for sure. Inside, it was modest also but with nice clean decent tables and rooms. We did not wait for long because it’s a weekday, not so crowded. We ordered 1. Dried Vegetable Pork 菜乾肉 (delicious: pork was cooked to very soft and well done), 2. Steamed Milkfish Fillets 香煎虱目魚肚 (marvelous: just be careful for fish spine), 3. Three Cup Calamari 三杯中卷 (classic: if you love calamari), 4. Fried Pumpkin with Sesame芝麻烤南瓜 (you would not believe pumpkin could be this luscious along with sesame), 5. Sliced Pork and Stir-fried Water Lilies炒水蓮 (very traditional home-cooking style: just delightful!), 6. Sautéed Beef Fillets with Green Pepper and Sweet Sticky Rice糯米椒牛肉 (interesting: I did not see sticky rice), 7, Dry-fried Flat Noodles乾煎板條 (not impressive), 8. Fried Cane Shoots 茭白筍 (simply fascinating), and 9. Soup with Dry-Korean cabbage and Pork Fillets高麗菜乾肉片湯 (yummy but expensive). Total bill? $140 (i.e., $15 per person). I believe it’s a bargain although someone might think the cost was toward a higher end for a stark restaurant like this.
