Why Far East Plaza is special ?

Far East Plaza is just around the corner from the iconic Orchard Road, lies six floors filled with some 800 fashion-forward, purse-friendly shops! Yes, there are a number of shops touting knock-off ‘designer’ labels and an equal number you may run screaming from; butin a city that can feel like one big shopping mall, this is the place to check out to avoid the ‘same-same’ type of stuff at all the big name shopping plazas. it's a great venue to wander around and find some hidden gems.

Since it’s opening in 1982, the shopping mall has emerged over the years as the well known Fashion Incubator. Located in the heart of the vibrant shopping belt with more than 600 retail shops and F&B outlets, it never fails to attract the young and the young at heart of locals and tourists.

Though it’s nostalgic past, it houses various up-to-date lifestyle and concept stores from Beauty and Tattoo Parlors to Clothings and Customized Business Suits which are both inexpensive and has a good value for money. It is also home to a broad selection of scrumptious café and eateries that serves local and international cuisine.

Apart from its retail galore, Far East Plaza also provides service residences with139 apartments ranging from two-bedroom units to spacious penthouses, which provide you with a home away from home at an affordable price.

What to explore at Far East Plaza?

The lower floor is now a series of hipster stores catering to young folks (then again this place always did lean towards younger shoppers for the most part). Whenever I'm back I still enjoy taking a quick stroll downstairs to see what kind of interesting items (like t-shirts, bags, shoes etc) that they sell there.

The main floor floors are a mix of standard clothing shops along with some random stores that sell all sorts of nicknacks, toys, video games and other items.

Upstairs there are still several food stalls that folks can eat it. It's impossible to miss as the smell of the food easily wafts to the lower floors. There's also a few other stores that you can get your hair done etc.

How to get to Far East Plaza?

From the MRT station after you come out, you can go via the underpass to (left)borders, Marriot Hotel, Shaw building. (Right) Wisma Atria, Taka. Somewhere midway along Taka basement 1, can turn left to cross over via underpass to Far East. Think the exit point is somewhere near the money changer

If you are looking for good cheap tourist shops then Far East Plaza is where you go. Allow several hours as each floor is filled with interesting shops that are good value. The basement and 5th floor are where you can buy a good meal from $4SGD.There are dozens of tailors, hairdressers, beauticians and cheap fashion items including clothing, electrical equipment, mobile phones, jewellery and shoes. Remember this is Singapore so they only cater for the smaller sizes. Up to Men's shoe size 10 (Australian) and up to Men's Large in clothing. My husband is XL size in clothing and size 11 in shoes, he was unable to find any items in his sizing. I'm normally an Australian size 10 and at 5'1", I found the clothing perfect, it may be too short for others. It's acceptable to barter, I certainly did!

The particular merchant I am recommending for this is the Moby Shop.By law, Singapore requires that all cell phones sold be unlocked. This is great, as you just insert your sim card into the phone, and you're set.Singapore is literally paved with official Samsung stores. The prices at Moby Shop are substantially less than these official outlets, and those prices are published on the Moby website.Another feature at the Moby Shop, especially for non-Singaporeans, is that GST is not charged. It's not a big deal, because you can present your receipts at the airport and get a refund, but why bother, when you don't have to pay in the first place. Since Moby Shop sells "export" phones, neither you or the shop are breaking spirit of the law.We live in the U.S., and our cellphone plan requires the use of unlocked phones. I had read positive reviews about Moby elsewhere before travel, and did some research using their website, mobyshop dot com dot sg. It is highly informative with detailed information about the specifications and features of the phones as well as published prices. Through this, I was able to determine the correct type of phone for our system, as well as features such as micro SD card capability.I purchased a Samsung SIII mini. Though intended for Europe, it was absolutely brand new, and factory sealed. The only european-ness about the phone is the power adapter. Big deal. These phones can be charged via USB on your computer. The key point is that the phone was brand new, and not refurbished. Two days later, we went back to purchase a Samsung SIII for the wife. Once again, brand new in the sealed box. This time Winston, the owner, and his staff had to transfer the data from the wife's old phone into the new one, trim the standard sim card into a micro sim card to fit the phone, and apply the matte screen protector. We have had these phones for 10 months now, and they still work great. Moby Shop accepted my Amex for both purchases, so you can preserve your cash. The location of the Moby Shop in the Far East Plaza is a little bit tricky. Use the big staircase on the left of the building. As soon as you enter, turn right and walk along the glass fronted arcade walkway. There are a number of cell phone dealers inside Far East Plaza. Purchase your phone at Moby Shop, and purchase your case or holder at one of the other dealers inside as they will have a greater selection of these accessories. Prices for the accessories at these other dealers seemed reasonable.

You can find everything from swimsuits and booty shorts to legit ball gowns and designer knockoffs. Need to get your nails done or your hair did? Good luck finding a place because there are so many to choose from! Some definitely look better than others, so choose wisely. There are makeup shops, jewelry/accessory shops, mobile phone case shops, beauty supply stores, tattoo parlors, massage parlors, tailors, and of course, food & beverage establishments. I truly believe The Sushi Bar (#04-28) has the best value for money chirashi in Singapore, and you can join the long queue tucked away on the 4th floor to see for yourself. A lot of the stalls have dainty, Korean style clothes which I'm not too much a fan of, but occasionally you'll find stalls with some edgy or trendy threads. My latest discovery is Yacht 21 (#04-124A) a preppy brand that's locally designed. I love their line because their clothes are light and meant for year-round summer weather! Only got $20 in your pocket because all those atas Orchard malls took your money? You might be able to stretch those dollars here! May the odds be ever in your favour. :)
