Why Donghuamen Night Market is special ?

Donghuamen night market only emerged in the early ‘80s, since when it has gathered more and more food stalls complete with screaming vendors and hungry crowds of both locals and foreign travelers. The food has to be seen to be believed. Almost anything you’d want (or in some cases, wouldn’t want) to try is on show, from innards and scorpions to silkworms and sea horses. Just daring yourself to try out the odder items is a lot of fun in itself.

One can find a row of unusual food stalls at Donghuamen Night Market. An array of Chinese food delicacies are on display with people bustling around to experience some new tastes. Items such as sheep's particular parts, offal soup, deep fried crickets, centipedes, silk worms, scorpions and lizards are available to eat on a stick. There are also the more widely recognised Western foods such as spring rolls, dumplings, crab cakes and candy fruit.

    Things nearby
  • The homeless people can follow you round and harass you for money, and you may have a thoroughly unenjoyable experience.
  • The smells drifting into the air from certain booths is strong and seems to penetrate your clothes, you should beware of that.
  • Only one stand in the entire set has insects and only one or two more has snake on a stick. You can take your photo and then move down the line and grab something more to your tastes.

Coming from the USA, the food here was quite shocking--scorpions, eel, tarantulas, centipedes...the list goes on and on! But they also have delicious caramelized pineapple and other treats. I would definitely recommend stopping by, whether you try something exotic or not. The atmosphere is fun, it's exciting to see everything that's available, and, who knows, you might find a new favorite food! It's a nice, relaxing evening activity.

Tried spider, snake and grasshoppers, only the last one worth the price. However the place is very cool. Open only at night.
