Why Dahican Beach is special ?

Dahican is an alluring stretch of beachfront along the southeastern coast of Mindanao, Philippines. It’s the prime attraction in Mati, a lovely small city in the province of Davao Oriental. Despite a fair number of resorts lying along its sandy strip, Dahican still feels rugged and untamed. Perhaps the endlessly pounding surf takes some gloss off its allure, though that’s exactly what brings the skimboarders to Amihan.

What to explore at Dahican Beach?

Dahican is a sunrise beach. The horizon is clouded over, but its beauty in the sky’s changing colors—cerulean fading to a rosy pink that bursts out in an orange glow. The sea is calmer than usual, and my friends take that as a sign to go in for a dip.

Dahican Beach in Mati is just gorgeous! Extensive creamy white sand so fine that its a pleasure to walk bare feet. Its 17-km stretch is so picturesque, very tropical with coconut trees on the fringe still a plenty. Yes there are resorts but they are widely spaced apart that they are not, at the moment an eyesore. And oh that wonderful ocean hues, a gentle contrast that’s soothing to the eyes.

Dahican Beach is the home for the Amihan Boys (and girls), a group of spirited young individuals who have the common passion for skim boarding and the free and easy way of life by the beach. Their Amihan sa Dahican is an ideal place to learn how to skim board (and in good season, to surf) as they have able instructors and who knows you might get inspired by the international skim board sensation Sonny Boy “Bayogyog” Aporbo who skim boards here every morning as his daily ritual.

The Amihan sa Dahican have also shown concern for the environment. Just beside their hut is a turtle nest sanctuary. Securely fenced for poachers. Dahican Beach is favorite nesting ground for turtles.

How to get to Dahican Beach?

1. WALK. From Davao International Airport, you just have to walk outside until you reach the highway.

2. BUS/VAN. Board the Bachelor Bus (yellow bus) to Mati. They pass by there almost every hour from 3am-8pm (Travel time is 5hours). You may also opt to take the taxi/jeepney going to GMALL or Victoria Plaza (jeepneys are available when you cross the highway). They have van terminals that goes to Mati City, fare is Php220 and travel time is 3-4hours.

3. HABAL-HABAL/MOTORBIKE. From Mati City Bus Terminal, you can take the motorbike (habal-habal) to Dahican Beach. Expect to pay Php50-100 depending on what time you arrive at Mati City. Tell the driver to bring you to Dahican, particularly to Amihan sa Dahican. After about 15 minutes you would find yourself walking towards the Pacific blue sea.

Only a 3-hours drive from Davao City via the Scenic Maharlika Highway, Dahican Beach is indeed a hidden gem. The roads to Mati, Davao Oriental are unbelievably good - even better than those in Davao City. If only local leaders encourage investors to develop the area, and ensure the beauty of the town is preserved, it would surely be a favorite destination. Leaders should start maximizing the potential of our beautiful destinations. The beach is definitely more beautiful than Bali!

This is the pride of South Min for surfing and other water extreme adventures. Located in Mati, Davao Oriental, and may be reached by bus or private vehicle. However, there are only few resorts and restaurants nearby. Its better to include the itinerary other beaches just few kilometers away and even the island hopping in Waniban..

Accommodation quite basic. You need to stay in Mati. Best hotel there I found was the one at the end of the boardwalk on the waterfront. A bit old but good air con, bed and a large room. Plenty of strong hot water.
