Why Cu Chi Tunnel is special ?

The Cu Chi Tunnels are an elaborate underground community made up of 250 km of tunnels and chambers below the city. The tunnels were dug with simple tools and bare hands during the French occupation in the 1940s, and further expanded during the Vietnam War in the 1960s to provide refuge and a defensive advantage over the American soldiers. Despite all the bombings in their town, the Cu Chi people were able to continue their lives beneath the soil, where they slept, ate, planned attacks, healed their sick, and taught their young. Some even wed and gave birth underground, but over 10,000 lost their lives here.

What to explore at Cu Chi Tunnel?

The tunnel network stretches over 250km in total length, and comprises numerous shelters, classes, sleeping chambers, kitchens and wells inside, which were built to house and feed the growing number of residents. Several rudimentary hospitals were created to treat the wounded. Most of the supplies and materials were stolen or scavenged from U.S. bases or troops.

How to get to Cu Chi Tunnel?

Take a special tourist bus. The ticket for the tourist bus can be bought at many places, for example at tourist agencies and hostels. At the Nga Hoang hostel it was sold for 7 USD but supposedly you can also get it for 5 USD. The tourist bus takes you directly to the tunnels and back to district 1

Take the public bus : Going by public bus you first have to take bus 13, which takes off at the Ho Chi Minh city bus center in the first district (see map below), and go all the way to the end station in Cu Chi.

At the Cu Chi bus station you have to switch to bus 79, which takes you directly to the tunnels. There are several signs along the way saying Cu Chi tunnels, so you can’t miss it.

You can use private car from Hcm city 50 usd/ 4 seat-car

This is the must visit place for those who want excitement in life. This place took the most important place in Vietnam war history. This tunnel located very far (almost 2 and half hours by motorbike) from Ho chi Minh city. The area of this tunnel almost two or three villages. It has four levels connected with many narrow tunnels with eachothers. You can see, war meeting room, arms storage, hiding place, kitchen, school and many more all underground. I always want some excitement in my life and love to travel. When I came to this place, decided to go to the third level, even though my army guide warns me about the oxygen level inside. I was stuck inside the tunnel and felt so tensed and thought I may not see the sunlight anymore. Thanks to my army guide who guided me in that situation and help me to come out slowly to the second level and then outside. When they pull me out I was losing all my strength at that moment. It was an incident in my life which I will never forget. You can also do the shooting with AK-47 and many other rifles in that place guided by the army guys.

We went with a great English speaking guide. It is about 2 hours drive from Saigon. (our guide told us the locals still call it that) The tunnels were busy that day, but he was excellent in directing us away from the crowd. Born in the 60's all I remember on TV was the war. It's called the American War here. The sadness we felt from the entire situation was heart felt. One person in our group had a brother that died here. It was very sobering to see in person. They were very good at explaining, I think fairly, how they lived and the booby traps they employed. Gut wrenching. On top of that there is a shooting range where you can shoot an AK47. So the entire time you're walking around imagining life then, the echoes of ammo firing off is in the air.It was interesting to see exactly how big a bomb crater can be, how they cooked and lived. Luckily our guide steered us away from the propaganda videos. I'm glad I went, it was a sobering experience.

Visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels was an interesting, educational, and informative experience for us. First of all, we had a very knowledgeable guide (you need a guide because none are provided at the site), the weather was lovely (72F in January), and the tunnel system is unique. We did learn that the tunnels were first begun during the French occupation and were not built (bu rather extended) during the VietNam/American conflict. It took approximately an hour to arrive at the tunnels from Saigon and we spent a couple of hours there without the gun range experience.

Simply a MUST VISIT destination - fascinating construction and history. I'm fairly claustrophobic but the tunnels you go down we're nothing to worry about. Just need strong calf muscles!
