“Crazy House” (Vietnamese: Ngôi nhà quái dị), is an unconventional building designed and constructed by Vietnamese architect Đặng Việt Nga in Đà Lạt, Vietnam.

Why Crazy House is special ?

As the intention of the architect is to make a fairy tale house, the “crazy house” resembles a tree with uneven windows, tunnel-shaped stairways, etc. Both the exterior and the interior of the guesthouse are created and decorated with twisting organic forms and very few right angles. The hollow “tree” extends in many directions, rising above to reach to the sky of the amazing Dalat. Walking along the cave-shape hallways inside the house is not simply a visit but an exhilarating experience, a departure from the norm; wild mushrooms and spider webs popping up on your way is not unusual. Besides, the guesthouse is really a spectacular construction with ten themed guest rooms such as the tiger room, the eagle room, the ant room and the kangaroo room…, with decorations and handcrafted furniture matching the theme. According to Viet Nga, each room has its own meaning: the tiger room refers to the Chinese; the eagle room describes the American; and the ant room represents the Vietnamese, etc.

Even though it is theoretically a hotel, Hang Nga Guesthouse is today regarded as a “museum” of the dream, childhood, abnormality, etc. Everyone has their own interpretation of the house, as well as their own experience but all of them agree on one thing: the guesthouse is so pure and natural that they were once again lost in their childhood dream.

What to explore at Crazy House?

A free-wheeling architectural exploration of surrealism, Hang Nga Crazy House defies definition. Joyously designed, outrageously artistic, this private home is a monument to the creative potential of concrete, with sculptured rooms connected by super-slim bridges and an excess of cascading lava-flow-like shapes. Think Gaudi on acid.

Wander around as you please; getting lost is definitely part of the experience.

The brainchild of owner Mrs Dang Viet Nga, the Crazy House has been an imaginative work in progress since 1990. Hang Nga, as she’s known locally, has a PhD in architecture from Moscow and has designed a number of other buildings around Dalat. One of her earlier masterpieces, the ‘House with 100 Roofs’, was torn down as a fire hazard because the People’s Committee thought it looked antisocialist.

Hang Nga started the Crazy House project to entice people back to nature, and though it’s becoming more outlandish every year, she’s not likely to have any more trouble with the authorities. Her father, Truong Chinh, was Ho Chi Minh’s successor, serving as Vietnam’s second president from 1981 until his death in 1988. There’s a shrine to him in the ground-floor lounge.

Crazy House (tell the taxi driver Hang Nha, else they think you're crazy) is a wonderful Gaudi inspired, bizarre Alice in Wonderland sort of structure. It's a visual treat for the eyes and a definite Must Do when you're in Dalat. However, be aware that to enjoy the full experience, you mustn't have vertigo (fear of heights). If, like me, you have a nasty case of jelly knees, sweaty palms and pulpitating heart... you'll still enjoy the experience, but a word of advise - skip the roof top prowling, and crazy mid air bridges connecting one building to the next. You'll still enjoy the sights. Just that, you'll envy your friends who are having a whale of a time leaping from roof to roof, while you watch them and take in the sights at ground level. It's a beautiful treat to see such an advant garde design, but I would advise fellow tourists to give the accommodations a miss if you're thinking about staying here. For a start, you wouldn't get any privacy with tourists roaming about the place. You'll hardly get any rest, and the honeymoon room is small enough to give you claustrophobia. You'll have to open the door to let in air and not feel trapped... And people will walk into your bedroom asking if they can look around - I was guilty of this very deed, but thankfully, the couple who stayed there were nice enough to allow us to check out their bedroom in the loft and the hypnotically small shower cubical with psychedelic circles.... Imagine having to entertain strange people walking in and out of your bedroom! You'll have to keep your valuables out of sight and keep the place tidy and neat. No washed panties in the bathroom! :p Other than that, I'd say... Definitely visit Crazy House!
