Why Coral Island is special ?

Coral Island, known locally as Koh Hae, is a beautiful getaway destination located three kilometres southeast of Phuket. The island features two main beaches, Long Beach and Banana Beach.

It's not called Coral Island for nothing; the snorkeling off Banana Beach is thrilling and if you go out far enough from Long Beach you will also have a lot to discover, at its impressive coral reef.

What to explore at Coral Island?

At night this location is beautifully calm; by day it is quite busy with day trippers but peace and quiet can be found at the extremities of both beaches. Deck chairs and sun loungers can be rented and come free (at the resort) with the day tour.

Both beaches have a lot of water sports activities - banana boats, canoes, and snorkeling. However, Long Beach features a speedboat to take you for a brief parasail outing (600 baht). At the Coral Island Resort there are batik classes (250 baht an hour) and even scuba diving classes starting off in the resort's swimming pool (English, Chinese and Thai spoken: 2,000 baht for a one-day course).

At the eastern end of Long Beach you will find an open-air pavilion used for massages.

How to get to Coral Island?

You can rent a longtail boat at either Rawai Beach or Chalong pier. Alternatively, book a snorkeling day trip and you will be taken by speedboat (traveling time, 15 minutes from Chalong) and provided with a mask, fins and snorkel as well as a buffet lunch. The cost of this trip (1000 baht) is not much more than renting a longtail and it is certainly quicker.

If you land at Long Beach and want to check out Banana Beach there is a trail at the eastern end of the beach that leads through the jungle. Walking time is around 15 minutes and it is highly advisable to wear good shoes as surfaces are uneven and the going not exactly easy. This trail is not for the elderly or for those with small children.

Tips for you

  • Grab a Chang beer or a MaiTai covered in orchids, some crab curry for lunch are must try
    Food
  • Bring your sunglass and sunscreen, swimming suite, camera. Bring tissues because the toilets are free but have no toilet paper
    What to bring
  • There are also many other activities available, from snorkeling, scuba, banana boat, jet skis, and parasailing
    Things to do
  • Buy your watersports in advance to get good prices
    Experience
  • Don't do the half day trip, as you can see people rush to the shores and get back on the boats again quickly. Be warned that a lot of trips say free flowing soft drinks/water and youu still must to pay for. It's very crowded during the peak seasons. Do not come. There's only a small section of beach you can use as so many boats, banana boats, parasailing and speed boat rides going on it's dangerous
    Experience
  • Be careful with the tour operators using the speedboat. It will take you a lot of time to reach the coral Island because they will first bring you to the parasailing area, then they will bring you to the underwater walk.

My wife and I visited October 2014. We are currently staying in Rawai Beach, Phuket, Thailand. You can take a tour to Coral Island. We decided not to take a tour but instead go by ourselves to Coral Island. We hired a longtail boat from the beach for $62.00 USD. This got us transportation to the island, back from the island, and our driver stayed on the island and waited for us the whole day. We chose our hours. We left at 9:00 a.m. and came back at 3:00 p.m.The riide on the longtail boat is 15 minutes. When we arrived on the island we walked as far away as we could from the boat drop off point. We rented two chairs at the very end of the beach for $6.20 USD for the whole day. They were positioned under shade trees so we kept out of the sun. We packed our own lunch and brought it on the boat. The island is pretty. The water is clear and picture perfect blue. The snorkeling is very good. We were all by ourselves and we never got near the tourists. We had a great day and were not ready to leave at 3:00 p.m. Even though there are many beaches on the island that you can drive to we are going to pay the $70.00 USD when we want to go to the beach. Its that nice.

It was a life changing experience at Coral Island, my first scuba dive. Nervousness, being a non-swimmer was obvious. The guide made the team to start with snorkeling with life jackets on & certain set of instructions,so that we can get comfortable with water & the creatures inside.Amazing is the word I have for the world inside Coral Island, beautiful fishes, sea urchins & corals were easily visible in clear water & white sand. There were a lot of people of differing nationalities full of adventure spirit. Guides are reliable & well trained. My guide made me overcome fear & get the scuba suit on to enter the beautiful water. I had booked my tour through Expedia-Activities.I went till 15 meters under water & the world beneath can’t be explained with words. Touching & feeding the fishes is easy. But the pressure under water is quite high, so don’t be surprised if you come out of water or lose your inhaler. Guide plays a crucial role here & he helped me beautifully, when I got scared, he pacified me and made me complete the entire dive for 40 mins. One can see banner fish, butterfly fish, parrot fish, sergeant major fish and trumpet fish, sea urchins as well as sea cucumbers. As for the coral there are at least three types – with solid table coral (acropora clathrata) dominating.Spending time on the beach at Coral Island is an immensely relaxing experience once you’re away from the crowd. Take a book and stretch out in one of the deck chairs provided. Or go for an oil or foot massage at the east side of the beach. There’s also a café/restaurant with good, well-presented food, set in a causarina tree grove right by the sand, not to mention a midday buffet featuring Chinese, Japanese and of course Thai food as well as an ice cream corner. As for activities on Coral Island, you can go kayaking and have an exciting (but speedy) parasailing outing. People were constantly queuing up for a go as the crew and speedboat driver made it all look so easy and safe. There is another beach a 15-minute walk away to the east, along an uneven track and through some pretty tenacious jungle growth. Simply go to the furthermost point of the beach at Coral Island Resort and you’ll see a trail leading off into the undergrowth. You’ll need decent shoes to enjoy this walk. While boarding & returning get your memory pic clicked, one can get it by paying 150-200 TBT. Please do not forget to carry Go-Pro (Under-water camera) to record the moments under water. Booking a package through Expedia was worthy, safe & with lunch and snacks facility. Everything including boat to guide, equipment & food is organized by them at a much cheaper price.I did scuba at other places, but Coral was best experience also because the weather conditions were favorable, water is not that cold & it's very clear to enjoy the beauty under water. No harmful fishes.

I went to Coral island with the help of Nikorn Marine, no doubt the staff is helpful but behind the seen I found lots of false promises and betray. Small incident ,I went to sea walking , they charge 5000 bath for two people including analog camera. I got to know sea walking is for 20 min but they hardly give us 5 min and when I come to my country and develop all photos. I got shock when I saw pics , all pics are dark . Its really hurt me, my all memory got destroy.now its up to you what do you want to do with your pricessless time and memory.
