Why Chuan Ban is special ?
Chuanban is hidden in an alleyway just north of the Bright Chang’an Building. It is always packed. As Sichuan’s provincial office it’s the place to get cheap and authentic Sichuan dishes.
Highlights include pock-marked Chen bean curd, gongbao chicken and twice-cooked fatty pork. Start with the popular appetiser fuqi feipian (husband-and-wife meat slices), a mixture of lean beef and ox lung dressed in amazing Sichuan condiments, which warms up your palate for the hot dishes to come.
Must try dishes:
Pock-marked Chen bean curd
Gongbao chicken
Twice-cooked fatty pork
Spicy tofu with chopped meat
Tender fish on a bed of crisp bean sprouts
Sweet pork with rice crust

Reviews
We were the only English speaking visitors that evening. Nobody on staff spoke English - we had a great time! Our young waiter tried to talk us into ordering two huge fish; they actually brought them out, but we had to just limit ourselves to one, since we were already quite full. There is a beautiful menu in English, but they sell fish by weight, and there is no price for the fish dishes in the menu, but no worries, the prices are very reasonable. The spinach dumplings were very delicate, and the big prawns in mince and herbs were amazing. If I ever go to Beijing again, I will definitely revisit this restaurant. We had a great time; everyone was very friendly!
The bona fide Sichuan flavors are hands-down the best in town, especially if you can handle the screamingly hot chilis. The bargain basement prices certainly sweeten the deal, too.
