Within the park areas close to Independence Square stands a tall symbolic structure called the Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship monument. It's a decent looking monument with the two countries flags on the side and represents the assistance given by the Vietnamese in defeating the Khmer Rouge during Pol Pot's reign. Vietnam seemingly the only country at the time who believed any wrongdoing was being carried out. It should have a greater platform for what it represents but it seems many Cambodians are not too keen on the Vietnamese. Still worth seeing as it is on route from the Independence Monument to the Royal Palace. I thought it was pretty impressive. And pretty impressive for what it stands for.

An interesting monument to the rescue of Cambodia from the nightmare that was the Pol Pot regime. The local 'bad guys' put on their white hats and ride to the rescue of the Cambodian people, bringing an end to Khmer Rouge rule. The monument is historically significant, but is almost tucked away out of sight. Worth a look if you're in the area.
