Why Bismillah Biryani Restaurant is special ?

Bismillah Biryani Restaurant has been Singapore's best kept secret for the dish which the 50-year-old serves with fish, chicken, mutton or vegetarian style.

Local Nasi Briyani is usually served with a curry gravy but owner-chef Syed Arif Salahuddin sees no need for that, preferring to prepare his dum briyani in the original style by cooking the meat, rice and spices all in one pot to give the dish its own natural flavours from the ingredients.

The Biryani dish is a beautiful mixture of colours from where the different spices colour the rice and comes holding all sorts of secrets inside, from a whole boiled egg to chunks of chicken or mutton (often still on the bone – apparently they use buy whole sheep to prepare it themselves ensuring nothing goes to waste) and is served with raita on the side as opposed to gravy or dalcha.

Eating the dum biryani here is an absolute must. Cooked with passion by ex-adman Arif with fresh, (relatively) healthy ingredients, it certainly lives up to the claim of being the best in Singapore!

The Kulfi (or Qulfi) is a nice dessert to end the meal here. It's a golfball-sized ice cream with pistachio bits in it.

The rice is really tasty. Good enough for Anthony Bourdain, good enough for me.

It was near lunch, I was in Little India and I saw the advertising banner. It was written a review (just like you may here). The hours of trading were restricted, the setup is very basic, the menu scant. Chicken or Mutton Biryani. - now that is focusI ordered chicken with a lime drink. The meal arrived soon after and was delicious, containing lots of whole spices - cardamom, peppercorn, clove all infused and available.A couple of local blokes (a Pakastani and Indiian) asked my thoughts. to which I thought it was very nice. They were regulars and said it was the most authentic Biryanil in Singapore - and it was excellent.I am not an expert on Biryani, so the opinion of these blokes was very encouraging - it was a good find and there are no frills in the dĂŠcor and the food is excellent!

We decided to have dinner at Bismillah instead of lunch as this very basic restaurant is not air-conditioned (having done our research before arrival, no not Anthony B, but some Singapore sites, especially ieatishootiblog). We arrived there closer to 9pm only to discover that other than the biryani all other dishes (mainly kekabs) had been sold out. But as we were there to eat biryani, this wasn’t a problem for us. The lamb biryani was excellent and the chicken one was even better. The basmati rice was cooked just right and the meat was tender and tasty, the dish was moist and flavourful. Yes, we will be returning, but will try to get there earlier to try the kebabs or call ahead to order some. The restaurant is very popular and so you can be sure that the food is always fresh. This is very, very basic restaurant, the service is quick, you eat, pay at the counter, and leave. It was still a bit hot and dark in the restaurant so we didn’t want to stay longer than we had to. But it’s got character, which I prefer to atmosphere. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, ready to chat. Most of their customers order takeaway and if we lived in Singapore, we’d probably do the same. We will be back the next time we visit Singapore.

Even though it dose not serve with the typical gravy and sauce, the already rich mutton with blend-gravy by itself is superb. The quality of the briyani rice is really good. The price is a little steep though than the usual briyani rice that you can normally get at the hawker. It is really worth your money. Mutton Briyani is the signature dish a must try. It is not 24-hours cafe rather look out for timing, 11.30am to around 2pm and 5.30pm to 7pm. Once the dish is finish, the shop closes.
