Why Beijing Xidan Commercial Street is special ?
Xidan CommercialStreet is called 'the second Wangfujing' in Beijing.Starting from Xuanwu Gate in the south, the commercial street is 5.4 kilometers(3.4 miles) long. The history of Xidan can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644). At that time, it was an essential crossing leading to the downtownarea from southwest of the city. Since then, this area has blossomed as a commercialcenter in the western part of Beijing City.
Xidan Commercial Street has stretched 880 metes from the Xidan crossing roads to Lingjing Hutong, with a width of 70 meters. A group of corridors has been build between various shops, business centers and office buildings. It has become a hub for clothes vendors, as are the two underground floors in the Xidan subway station.
What to explore at Beijing Xidan Commercial Street?
Xidan Commercial Street is known as one of the three most famous commercial centers in Beijing, together with Wangfujing Dajie and Qianmen Da Zha Lan. It consists mainly of food markets, clothes stores and commodities. The street is an international, modern, commercial combination of shopping, dining, recreation and culture. The center part of the commercial street is an entertainment square. There are a great variety of activity places prepared for you underground from the square, including a cinema, bowling alley, swimming pool and even an indoor rock climbing wall. There are also many modern buildings like the Xidan Department Store, the Xidan Shopping Center and the Chung You Department Store which can offer you middle and high class fashions, cosmetics and other goods. You can find many special counters for well known, world-wide brand names, such as Dior, LV, Chanel and Gucci. They will certainly dazzle your eyes.
There are many entertainment places along the street, such as the Beijing Concert Hall and the Capital Cinema. Apart from that, Xidan Culture Square, which covers an area about 35,000 square meters (8.65 acres), is the largest comprehensive entertainment place in downtown Beijing. It balances with the beauty of Capital Times Square to the south on this busy commercial street, offering ideal resting places for the visitors.

Tips for you
I currently live in Beijing and I visit almost weekly. The shopping is divine and I very rarely see tourists. It is definitely a local hangout. One of my favourite things to do is to grab Starbucks (or Costa Coffe if you prefer) and people watch. There are stores that range from fast fashion with Zara and H&M to classic at the Gap and the fancier stuff at DKNY etc. There is pretty much something for everyone. Almost every beauty brand is represented in the department stores for my fellow cosmetics junkies. There is also a fantastic market that has so much stuff and at super cheap prices (if you haggle like you mean it haha). Definitely haggle because they will try to rip you off if you're obviously foreign. Decide what you want and look for it in multiple stalls to compare prices. Overall, Xidan rocks.
This is a long street filled with malls carrying international brands. The prices are relatively higher in Beijing as compared to Singapore. We went into Joy shopping mall and was amused that such a posh shopping mall built their toilet doors with locks! So, you could actually see people inside. If you are not keen on international brands shopping, there are some alleys that allows you to do cheap shopping for local mass manufactured clothes and accessories. There is also a mall that hosts many little mini shops selling clothes, accessories, shoes and bags. If I didn't recall wrongly, it's located near 77th Street underground mall and Starbucks.
