Why Banyan Beach Bar and Restaurant is special ?

Banyan Beach Bar and Restaurant, perfectly positioned at the furthest end of An Bang beach’s stretch of seaside eateries, deservedly pulls in the crowds with alfresco beachside dining, cosy cabanas and a traditional Vietnamese house for chilly winter evenings. Huge beanbags and loungers line the beach for guests to stretch out on, which are very welcome after sampling the unlimited San Miguel beer or excellent premium, very tropical cocktails they serve. Fresh tapas, Vietnamese (with a French twist), shellfish – including the weekend oyster specials — are quite easily the tastiest dishes you’ll find locally, meaning this joint attracts tourists and expats year-round.

Tips for you

  • There’s a pool table and petanque course to keep the kids out of trouble, quiet romantic bolt-holes and vast grassy areas where you can shove some tables together and enjoy a rowdy meal with friends.
    Things to do
  • You should check whether the Banyan is open when travelling during winter.
    Things to do
  • They will let you use the chairs down on the sand for free if you order lunch at some stage in the day.
  • The food is more western than asian – you feel the french influence from the owner.
  • Surfboards are available for extra charges but there is a miscommunication among the staff.
  • Unlike places in town, there is never a curfew at the beach, so it’s possible to tick both sunset and sunrise off your list of things to see in one sitting.
    What to know
  • Weekend evenings are party time when Banyan throws some of the best themed events around with DJs and the occasional live band.

We had many lunches at the quirky Banyan Restaurant and really liked each of them. The staff is friendly and the food very good. You have free shower at the bar, can rent a board for playing in the waves, the music is good and because it is kind of at the end of that beach area, you have a relatively quiet atmosphere. There are a lot of guests though, who don't really understand that these chairs are not for free and that you should consume something at the restaurant - and that causes daily misunderstandings. Maybe a sign to clarify? The only suggestion for improvement I have: I wish people would stop leaving their cigarette buds and rubbish in the sand, maybe it would help to set up a rubbish bin at the entrance to the bar to encourage them to leave their waste there? But I may be totally wrong with this idea. Anyway: I think this place is wonderful to spend time at the An Bang Beach!

We had a great time at Banyan. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The food was good and the drinks were excellent. The only improvement I would suggest would be for the staff to learn how to make a frozen Margarita but this is really a small point. Hiring the surfboards is cheap and fun as well. The stand up paddle board has a pretty dodgy repair so until it gets replaced I would avoid hiring it unless you are really up for a challenge. Overall though the kids had a great time and we spent countless days here.
