Why Bang Tao Beach is special ?

Bang Tao Beach (or Bangtao) is one of the longest beach in Phuket, half way between airport and Patong Beach on the west coast of the island, where all the beaches are. With its beautiful stretch of sand, Bangtao is always associated with the gigantic resort complex known as 'Laguna Phuket'. This area was one of the tin mines that made the fortune of Phuket long ago, but was abandoned later as the land was consider worthless. Laguna Phuket managed to transform it in an very profitable award winning 'eco project' with international resorts such as Banyan Tree Resort, Dusit Thani Resort and Laguna Beach Resort.

What to explore at Bang Tao Beach?

Near Bangtao is Cherngtalay, a village offering nice dining alternatives to the many resorts restaurants: Tatonka, Supper Club or Black Cat, but also many bars and pubs, souvenir shops, spas and massages plus a long time established horse back riding that offers fun horse strolls along the beach. If you are lucky you'll meet one of the baby elephants from the hotels, an amazing photo opportunity!

It's also your chance to visit a real fresh market, an experience everyone should have, and not very far from the market is the Wat Cherngtalay, a bright and colourful Thai temple.

Then you have the Bang Tao village, probably the original fisherman area, but this part of the beach is not as attractive. You will find several less luxurious but more affordable hotels with beach access over there, a good one would be the Best Western Bangtao Beach Resort and quite a few beach front restaurants as well.

Gorgeous Thai village with lots of little stores & great restaurants & bars suitable for kids/teenagers. No sleezy bars like Patong (stayed 30 mins in that hell hole) - bang Tao very safe, friendly, quieter but with still plenty of activity. Lots of Swedish & Russian visitors & expats which made things even more interesting. Beautiful beach with a food / souvenir stalls dotted along the way. Massage ladies on beach offering all things - massage, facials, hair braiding, manicure & pedicures. Wish the jet skis would go away though as I don't like the sound & they chop up the beach. We had fireworks every night from various places. Fantastic mini golf course (run by swedes) which kept us greatly entertained. Hired a car for 3 days out of our stay & covered most of the island. Even though we love Bang Tao, I think we all loved Surin the most. Extremely beautiful with no jet skis!! If you want the real Southern Thailand experience, stay in surin or bang Tao - you can't go wrong.

We stayed at the outrigger laguna beach resort for 10 days, so this beach was on our doorstep. We went to the beach most days, if only for a quick dip in the sea after lunch. The beach was very clean, I didn't see any rubbish even on New Year's Day after there were lots of people on the beach!Hotel sun loungers are not allowed on the beach and must stay on the hotel grounds. This wasn't a problem for us, and it didn't seem to be a problem for anyone else. Our hotel sun loungers were just at the top of the slope to the beach.I never saw anyone being hassled on the beach by sellers or anyone else. There were some water sport activities nearby; jet skis, banana boats etc, but not simple pedalos. The sand shelved quite quickly into the sea, so caution would be needed for small children, also there was a big undercurrent which pulled you out deeper quite quickly. The lifeguard swimming flag was yellow every day we were there. The water was warm enough to get in and just float, you didn't need to keep moving to keep warm. The only negative is that while we were there the water contained something that was stingy. It wasn't jelly fish, unless they were extremely tiny. I'm not sure what it was, maybe tiny mites. Whatever it was we all got 'stung' every time we got in the sea, in at least 10 different places all over our bodies, including under our swimsuits, and as I say sometimes we were only in for 10 minutes. Some of the stings would go aware almost immediately while others would stay longer, up to 10 minutes after showering and getting in the pool. This did put us off the sea a bit, especially my 12 year old daughter, who gave up getting in.I would say we also experienced this on another beach we went to as part of a day tour, so it mustn't be unique to this beach. All in all I would recommend this beach, but maybe not to families with small children due to the stinging, and undercurrent.
