Why Bagan Archaeological Museum is special ?

The Bagan Archaeological Museum is located in north of Bagan, in the Old Bagan region. A museum was built in the northern part of Bagan, by U Sein Kho, who was the stone tablets specialist from the Myanmar stones tablets department. He collected the ancient stone tablets that were found around Bagan and displayed these in the museum. That museum was opened to public in 1904.

Within 60 years of establishment, the museum had collected sufficient amount of ancient artefacts from and near Bagan. Therefore, the museum needed to be enlarged and renovated for more exposure. Then in 1979, another museum was built and opened to public. The new Bagan Archaeological Museum was opened on 17 April 1998. It is now a three storey building built in an octagonal design as the base. The building is fully furnished with Myanmar handicrafts.

As one enters the museum there is a large hall where many bulky objects contemporary or older are exhibited. From both side of this hall there are entrances to other rooms where one can be acquainted with the literature, architecture, social life of the bagan Kingdom through wall paintings artifacts from every day life etc.The museum has two other floors where items of minor arts, Buddah Images and other sculpture are exhibited. The entrance is not so expensive as all the other things in Myanmar! Surpise! Worthwhile to visit.

many less discriminate travellers would probably leave quickly saying big deal.it has a large collection of fine painting of different bagan temples and a large collection of stone temple documents mostly listing the generosity of the donors but with a good indication of the culture and language of the day. yes the exquisite budda's and stone and some bronzes they had to protect from theft from temples. ah toilet out the back is included in your weeklong ticket when you ride past on your bike each day a short thing to remember.
