Why Aung Puppet Show is special ?

Aung's Puppet Show, down the road opposite the Nanda Wunn Hotel, this place has two nightly shows of traditional Myanmar puppetry.

Within a pocket-size theater, local puppeteer Aung (who is also a cab driver) who comes from a family with a long tradition in the art puts on a nightly half-hour show in which he showcases his skills. It's cute and very entertaining, a nice evening activity in a place where there aren't any. Aung knows exactly what he's doing and his marionettes have the audience in constant giggles. On the premises is a puppet show with marionettes and other souvenirs.

What to explore at Aung Puppet Show?

A Burmese puppet troupe includes puppet handlers, vocalists, and musicians. Plays are based on Buddhist fables, historical legends, and folktales, among other stories. The shows are performed for adults and children together, and typically last all night.

The puppets themselves are marionettes, ranging in height from about one to three feet. Nearly all are stock figures, changing their names but keeping their characteristics for each play. Some of these puppet types have been standard for centuries—especially those developed from Buddhist fables, which probably formed the puppeteers’ first repertoire.

At Aung the Puppet Master’s house, with only 3000 kyats, indulge in this cultural experience. Aung runs a local family business in Nyaungshwe (a town near Inle Lake). His backdrops are made by his brother, and his puppets are made by his uncle.

Mr Aung is clearly passionate about preserving the traditional art of puppetry. His is a one man show, performed in a small room with very limited seating capacity, in the front of his house, just off the main road. The 1/2 hour show ended all to quickly, but Mr Aung seemed to genuinely enjoy coming out to talk with and answer questions from his audience. He allowed us to more closely examine the marionettes and be assured they are not easy to manipulate. Mr Aung performed with enthusiasm for only 6 people, he deserves a bigger audience. You can easily arrange you evening around his performance. We enjoyed it so much, we bought a small marionette, made by his uncle, as a souvenir.
